Project Description
At the beginning of April, Team Rubio Monocoat and Caldo visited the beautiful Leopard Creek Golf Estate in Malelane, to refurbish a Massaranduba deck with the new ‘DuroGrit’. A total of 250m2 of Massaranduba decking had to be cleaned and prepped in preparation for the ‘DuroGrit’ application.
Day 1 started by cleaning all the surfaces with our ‘Exterior Wood Cleaner’. This is a very important step as the product removes grey discolouration, green deposits and dirt. A good preparation is crucial to ensure a lasting protective finish. All new, greyed, and previously treated wood must always be treated beforehand with ‘Exterior Wood Cleaner’.
Preparation/cleaning steps:
Step 1. Dampen the surface with water. Use a garden hose.
Step 2. Apply some undiluted ‘Exterior Wood Cleaner’.
Step 3. Scrub the treated area with a nylon scrubbing brush in the lengthwise direction of the wood until it is clean. This will cause the product to foam. For stubborn stains, repeat the treatment.
Step 4. Rinse thoroughly until all the foam has disappeared.
Step 5. Allow the surface to dry well.
After allowing the surface to dry properly, it was time for the ‘DuroGrit’ application. We started by adding 10% ‘Open Time Extender’ to the ‘DuroGrit’ and mixed it well. For this project, we opted for the colour Sutton Grey, which is part of our Salt Lakes Collection.
Application steps:
Step 1. Stir the product for a few minutes before use. *When working during extreme heat, we recommend adding 10% ‘Open Time Extender’ to the ‘DuroGrit’ product. This will allow you to apply the product easier and be able to keep a wet edge during application.
Step 2. Apply the product evenly to the surface with a soft, synthetic brush made for water-based products. Work in the direction of the wood, always covering the full length. So never stop in the middle of a board but only at a natural break (e.g. a seam, edge, staircase, etc.). Work in small sections of about 1 or 2 boards wide. Always apply sufficient product and brush again afterwards to avoid start/stop and brush marks (remember not to exert too much pressure on the brush).
Step 4: Let it dry for 3 hours – Complete curing takes place after 3 days
(at 20°C / 68°F).
Tips:
– Maintain a wet edge to avoid overlaps.
– Only work in frost-free and dry conditions and avoid application of ‘DuroGrit’
when rain is expected within 10 hours of application.
– Keep in mind that low temperatures, low ventilation, and high humidity significantly
slow down the drying and curing process.
