About Us

Wood is at the heart of what we do. It forms the cornerstone of our craft. By protecting it with our specialised products, we honour its elegance and durability, ensuring that its natural beauty lasts for generations to come.

In line with this commitment, we’ve recently introduced some groundbreaking innovations. With our new exterior product DuroGrit we offer high-performance protection for all outdoor wood. The unique FibreGrit Technology is like nothing the market’s seen before. It allows the product to combine natural colours with an extremely durable UV protection in just one layer.

Another novelty that we’re proud of is the introduction of  SheenPlus. This ecological after-treatment gives wooden surfaces treated with Oil Plus 2C a durable satin look and has  been very well-received. It’s particularly liked by customers looking for an alternative to varnish, while maintaining the sheen. Thanks to our recently added Plant 3, we also have enough space to produce and stock these and other new products for years to come.

What remains our core principle is the safety and ecology of our products. We make products that are safe for humans and nature. The certificates we received for our new products DuroGrit and SheenPlus are just one way of proving this ambition, as well as our goal of becoming a carbon neutral company.

Thank You to Our Rubio Monocoat Family

As we make this all possible, we can’t help but express our heartfelt gratitude to our partners and customers, and especially to our incredible Rubio Monocoat Family. Their passion and dedication have been the driving force behind our accomplishments.

SheenPlus can be applied over Oil Plus 2C (after minimum 24 hours) to increase the sheen level. Attention: SheenPlus can’t be applied to raw wood.

Although many stains can be removed with Universal Soap, Surface Care, All Natural Wood Cleaner or All Natural Wood Cleaner Spray, Rubio Monocoat also developed a number of specific stain removers. Stubborn lime stains can be handled effectively with Limespot Remover, grease stains with Grease Remover and black/tannin stains with Tannin Remover. If the stain has penetrated the wood too deeply, the spot can be sanded and re-oiled.

First select the most suitable stain remover for your spots.

Technically, this asks if the product is safe to ingest, but we understand what you’re getting at.

While we do not recommend ingesting our products, it can be safely used on a food contact surface. We even have a Food Contact Compliance from an independent testing institute (Eurofins).

To achieve a raw wood effect, the recommendations depend on your type of wood.

Even though we have a non-pigmented/transparent variant in the Oil Plus 2C range, called “Pure”, this does not quite keep the natural colour for all wood types.

Oil Plus 2C is a linseed oil based product. Linseed oil has a naturally occurring colour to it which will enrich/darken the wood compared to its raw state.

Here are common solutions to neutralise the richening that occurs when applying oil-based finish to a few popular wood types:

  • White Oak: you can use the colour “Smoke 5%”, “Natural” or “White 5%”
  • Red Oak: you can use Precolor Easy “Mint White” to neutralise the pink/red tones of the red oak and then apply the Oil Plus 2C “White 5%” to it.
  • Walnut: (because it is so dark on its own) you can use “Pure” to keep it looking as close to unfinished as possible. A slight darkening will occur, but this is typically desired.
  • Softwood (beech, maple, pine, …): use Oil Plus 2C “White 5%” or “Natural”
  • Chestnut: use Oil Plus 2C “Smoke 5%”

If you are looking for an effective solution for all types of wood (including darker wood types) Invisible Protector is a very good alternative.

We always advise to do a test first.

Wood that you want to finish with oil must be thoroughly sanded, even new wood. It’s important you make sure that the surface is completely scratch-free. In case of renovation, all previous treatments should first be completely removed. We recommend you end with a screening net P100 – 120 (floors), P100 – P150 (furniture, stairs, worktops, …) or P150 (MDF, Valchromat, Finsa boards). The final sanding grit will determine the end result. The smoother you sand, the less oil can penetrate in the wood and less intense the colour (and protection) will be.

Preparation products:

After the sanding process, you need to remove all the dust. You can do this by vacuum cleaning and by using Rubio Monocoat Cleaner. This product removes all the microdust that is left and prevents the oil from bonding with the dust instead of the wood fibres.

Depending on your goal or wooden support, you can use one of our other preparation products:

  • WoodPrep: use this product instead of Cleaner to achieve deeper colors or to minimise sanding errors. The product avoids (or reduces) the potential for visible sanding swirls, provides a more consistent and even colour penetration in case of uneven sanding and a more consistent colour penetration on naturally blotchy wood species ( e.g. maple).
  • Tannin Primer: use this product instead of Cleaner in case you’re treating horizontal tannic woods (e.g. oak, chestnust, …) that are often subjected to liquids. This product will prevent that tannin marks will appear on the surface. Be aware that this product, just like WoodPrep, will raise the wood fibres, so you’ll achieve a more intensely coloured end result.
  • Deep Cleaner: use this product instead of Cleaner in case you’re working with greasy (tropical) hardwoods ( e.g. teak, iroko, merbau, Afzelia, Afrormosia, …). Deep Cleaner can also be used as a preparation when you need to re-oil in case of renovation. We advise you to wear gloves when using Deep Cleaner.

Notes: Don’t use any preparation or pre-treatment product in case you’re working with MDF, Valchromat or Finsa boards.

Oil Plus 2C is a VOC-free hardwax oil of the newest generation which colours and protects your wood in one single layer. It’s perfectly suitable for high traffic zones and can be applied to all interior wood surfaces (furniture, countertops, tabletops, stairs, walls, floors, etc.), almost all wood types and wood species (solid wood, veneer, MDF, etc.). The combination of the oil (A) and the Accelerator (B) guarantees a quick curing for optimal protection.

  • Step 1: Sand the surface

  • Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly and clean with Cleaner

  • Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Step 4: Apply Oil Plus 2C

  • Step 5: Let it absorb for a few minutes and wipe away all excess oil

  • Step 6: Pass again with a new white Rubio Monocoat Pad

  • Step 7: Let the surface dry for 12 – 24 hours

Step 1: Sand the surface scratch-free. Finish with screening net 100. (When renovating, you must first remove all the residues from previous treatments completely.)

Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly and clean with Cleaner. Eliminate remains of dust with Cleaner and wait until the surface is completely dry.

Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Stir the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Carefully mix the two components (1 to 2 minutes) with a ratio of appr. 3 units A to 1 unit B.

  • Attention, the mixture of A and B can only be used during 4 – 6 hours. So be careful and only mix the amount you’ll need in that timeframe.

Step 4: Apply Oil Plus 2C

  • Work in zones of 5 – 10 m². Start each zone by treating the borders with a beigeor red Scrubby pad. Then apply a small quantity of Oil Plus 2C every other 0,5 meters using a brush. Spread out plank-wise using a polishing machine with a beigeor red 16 inch pad.

*Spatula method: Spread out Oil Plus 2C with a stainless spatula in zones which can be finished in maximum 30 minutes (including steps 5 and 6).

Step 5: Let it absorb for a few minutes and wipe away all excess oil

  • Thoroughly remove all excess oil with a cloth or a polishing machine with a white 16 inch pad. The surface should feel non-sticky!

Step 6: Pass again with a new white Pad

  • After having finished all the zones, pass again with a new white pad. Now the surface should feel non-sticky.

Step 7: Let the surface dry for 12 – 24 hours

  • Let dry the surface for 12 to 24 hours and wait at least 5 days to clean with water and Universal Soap.

Instructions to apply Oil Plus 2C on interior furniture, stairs & countertops

  • Step 1: Sand the surface

  • Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly and clean with Cleaner

  • Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Step 4: Apply Oil Plus 2C

  • Step 5: Let it absorb for a few minutes and wipe away all excess oil

  • Step 6: Let it dry for 12-24 hours

Step 1: Sand the surface

  • Sand the surface scratch-free. Finish with screening net 100 to 150. (When renovating, you must first remove all the residues from previous treatments completely.)

Step 2:  Vacuum thoroughly and clean with Cleaner

  • Vacuum thoroughly, eliminate remains of dust with Cleaner and wait until the surface is completely dry.

Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Stir the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Carefully mix the two components (1 to 2 minutes) with a ratio of appr. 3 units A to 1 unit B.

  • Attention, the mixture of A and B can only be used during 4-6 hours. So be careful and only mix the amount you’ll need in that timeframe.

Step 4: Apply Oil Plus 2C

  • Spread out a small quantity of Oil Plus 2C using a beige or red Scrubby pad or hand sander with a small beige 5.9 inch Pad (you can also use the Mouse Pad for smaller objects and corners).

    • Spatula method: spread the Oil Plus 2C out with a stainless spatula in zones which can be finished within maximum 30 minutes (next step included!)

    • For ceilings and walls you can use our Brush and beige Scrubby pad to spread out the oil

Step 5: Let it absorb for a few minutes and wipe away all excess oil

  • Let absorb during a few minutes. Wipe away all excess oil with a cloth or a hand sander with a small white 5.9 inch pad. Finish off with a cloth within max. 30 minutes. The surface should feel non-sticky!

Step 6: Let it dry for 12-24 hours

  • Let dry the surface for 12 to 24 hours and wait at least 5 days to clean with water and Surface Care.

Over time the Oil Plus 2C treated surface may show some wear. Indications for wear are a visible walking zone, a surface that is more stain-sensitive and remains wet for a longer time after cleaning. If the surface shows much wear and tear or it needs a colour repair, you need to re-apply Oil Plus 2C in the colour that the wood was originally treated with.

Note: If the wooden object is too much damaged or neglected, you will first need to sand the surface and end with the same screening grit as you initially finished your wooden object with.

Instructions

  • Step 1: Clean the surface with Deep Cleaner

  • Step 2: Rinse well with clean water

  • Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Step 4: Apply Oil Plus 2C

  • Step 5: Let it absorb for a few minutes and wipe away all excess oil

  • Step 6: Let it dry for 12 – 24 hours

Step 1: Clean the surface with Deep Cleaner

  • Dampen the surface with just water and using a mop or sponge.

  • Dilute the Deep Cleaner with water (5% Deep Cleaner to 95% water).

  • Scrub the area with the dilution and a nylon scrubbing brush in the lengthwise direction of the wood. Do this until the surface is clean and spot free.

    • Note: for stubborn stains, repeat the treatment or use one of our stain removers ( Grease Remover, Limespot Remover or Tannin Remover).

Step 2: Rinse well with clean water

  • Remove the dissolved dirt with a mop and clean water until all the foam has disappeared and the surface looks clean again.

  • Allow the surface to dry well (± 30 minutes at a temperature of 20°C and in a well-ventilated room).

Step 3: Mix the two components (A and B) together

  • Stirr the A component until a homogenous mixture is obtained.

  • Spread out a small quantity of Oil Plus 2C using a beige or red Scrubby pad or hand sander with a small beige 5.9 inch Pad (you can also use the Mouse Pad for smaller objects and corners).

Step 6: Let the surface dry for 12 to 24 hours and wait at least 5 days to clean with water and Universal Soap or Surface Care.

The great advantage of Oil Plus 2C, if correctly maintained, is its optimal and durable protection. With lacquer systems, the initial wear resistance might be higher, but repair and maintenace are much more difficult and intensive.

01.    Vacuum frequently. Remove dust and sand on a regular base. Depending on the traffic, this might be daily or weekly.

02.    Clean with soap no more than once per week. Only use our cleaning products and wait at least 5 days after the Oil Plus 2C application before you clean for the first time. Depending on the amount of dirt, you should clean the surface regularly with Surface Care (furniture, worktops) or Universal Soap (floors). We do not recommend cleaning more than once a week. When cleaning too often or with a too high concentration of Universal Soap, a thin layer of soap residue can be left on the surface which dirt can easily stick to (if this is the case, you should use Deep Cleaner to remove the soap residues).

03.    Wear or colour restoration. Over time, however, the surface may show some wear. Indications for wear are a visible walking zone and a surface that’s more stain-sensitive and remains wet for a longer time after cleaning. If the surface is still visually good but feels a little bit dry or rough, you can apply the Universal Maintenance Oil or Refresh Eco (furniture and worktops only). If the colour is also affected, it is better to re-apply Oil Plus 2C in the colour that the wood was originally treated with. Both products can be applied without sanding the surface. A very dirty surface should be cleaned first with Deep Cleaner.

04.    Frequency. The frequency of maintenance depends very much on the intensity with which the wooden surface is used. Surfaces often subjected to liquids and mechanical resistance will require a more frequent maintenance.

Respect a minimum drying time of 12 to 24 hours while ensuring sufficient ventilation. Afterwards you can use the surface again. When in doubt, use a cotton cloth and rub an inconspicuous area. If no oil sticks to the cloth, the surface is sufficiently dry. However, wait until day 5, until the oil has completely cured, to clean with water for the first time. Until then, be careful with liquids.

No, after sanding you either use the regular Cleaner or the WoodPrep, but not both. Cleaner is our standard preparatory cleaner. This product removes all the microdust that is left and prevents the oil from bonding with the dust instead of the wood fibres. WoodPrep is also a preparatory cleaner but contrary to the regular Cleaner, this product will raise up the wood fibres. Because of this, you’ll achieve a deeper colour and minimise

Although many stains can be removed with Universal Soap and Surface Care, Rubio Monocoat also developed a number of specific stain removers. Stubborn lime stains can be handled effectively with Limespot Remover, grease stains with Grease Remover and black/tannin stains with Tannin Remover. If the stain has penetrated the wood too deeply, the spot can be sanded and re-oiled.

No, Oil Plus 2C offers enough protection. However, an optional extra protection coat with Universal Maintenance Oil can be applied after 36-48 hours (and when the surface is completely dry) in case the surfaces are highly subjected to liquids, mechanical wear and tear (e.g. wooden surfaces in public spaces, bars, restaurants).

We advise you to add Accelerator in every circumstance. Not only will the oil dry much faster, it will also cure better and faster. The curing process is very important in order to have a strong end result. You can never obtain the same strong protection, wear-, water- and heat resistance without Accelerator.

Any overlapping can be removed! Spray clean water on the floor and polish with a polisher or scrubby with a red Rubio Monocoat Pad. Keep in mind that any overlapping WILL NOT be removed when applying the oil. It is important to remove any overlapping areas before applying Oil Plus 2C.

No, we don’t recommend doing this. There are plenty of different / lighter colours to choose from.

If there isn’t any discolouration, you can remove the residues with Grease Remover. Afterwards, most probably you’ll have re-oil a bit with Oil Plus 2C in the original colour afterwards. If there is discoloration, due to the plasticizers in the tape, use Limespot Remover. Here again, you’ll have to re-oil with Oil Plus 2C in the original colour.

Tip: make sure you never use tape with plasticizers or softeners in. This will damage the Oil Plus 2C.

Yes. We have a specially developed WoodCream Brush made of polyester fibre to make sure that you don’t leave any brush marks and that the product doesn’t dry on the brush easily. You can use the brush on both smooth and rough surfaces.

WoodCream Brush is available in 3 different widths:  1”, 2” and 3”.

WoodCream can be applied in 1 or 2 layers depending on the look you want. A second layer can be applied after at least 3 hours and within 24 hours after the first layer.

In case of renovation on older non-Rubio Monocoat products we always advise to apply two layers to avoid gloss differences between raw wood and patches where the old coating was still present.

We also advise to always dilute WoodCream with WoodCream Softener for the second layer.

Step 1: We recommend allowing the new installed wood to weather outdoors for about 4-6 weeks

  • When this is not possible, sand the wood scratch-free with a screen 80 grit to open the wood pores.
  • Allow already installed new wood or wood containing natural wood extractives (oak, red cedar, afzelia, redwood, …) and especially hardwood (ipé, teak, merbau, …) to weather outdoors for about 4-6 weeks. This will allow the water-soluble substances to come out of the wood and will allow the wood to absorb the DuroGrit better.

Step 2: Clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and let it dry

  • First wet the wooden surface with a fine mist of water from a garden hose.
  • Clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and a stiff bristled nylon scrubbing brush (wear gloves and eye protection).
  • Do not allow the solution to dry. Thoroughly rinse the cleaning solution residue with clean water until all foaming residue is rinsed away.
  • Allow the surface to dry completely.

Step 3: Apply DuroGrit

  • Only work in frost-free and dry conditions and avoid application of DuroGrit when rain is expected within 10 hours of application.
  • Stir the product a few minutes before use.
  • Apply the product evenly to the surface with a soft, synthetic brush made for water-based products. Work in the direction of the wood installation, always covering the full length. For vertically installed boards, this means from top to bottom and for horizontally installed wood from left to right (or vice versa). So never stop in the middle of a board but only at a natural break (e.g. a seam, edge, staircase, etc.). Work in small sections of about 1 or 2 boards wide. Always apply sufficient product and brush again afterwards to avoid start/stop and brush marks (remember not to exert too much pressure on the brush).

Step 4: Let dry for 3 hours

  • Let the surface dry for about 3 hours. Complete curing takes place after 3 days (at 20°C (68°F)).

◦ Keep in mind that low temperatures, low ventilation and high humidity significantly slow down the drying and curing process.

Maintain a wet edge to avoid overlaps. (Wet on wet)

Step 1: Remove all residues of old applications.

  • Remove all residues of old applications by sanding the surface scratch-free. End with a screen 80 grit, do not sand smoother. The smoother you sand, the less product can penetrate in the wood and the less intense the colour (and protection) will be.

◦ Is your wood too dirty to start sanding right away? Then first clean it with either water or Exterior Wood Cleaner (see step 2 for instructions). By already removing a lot of dirt beforehand, your sandpaper won’t get clogged up right away when sanding.

Step 2: Clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and let it dry

  • First wet the wooden surface with a fine mist of water.
  • Clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and a stiff bristled nylon scrubbing brush (wear gloves and eye protection).
  • Do not allow the solution to dry and thoroughly rinse off the cleaning solution residue with clean water until all foaming residue is rinsed away.

Step 4: Let it dry for 3 hours

  • Let dry for about 3 hours. Complete curing takes place after 3 days (at 20°C / 68°F).

◦ Keep in mind that low temperatures, low ventilation and high humidity significantly slow down the drying and curing process.

Use Rubio Monocoat Exterior Soap. Do not use any other cleaning products or detergents as these might affect the protection!

In general, we recommend a yearly visual check-up just after winter season.

Please check for the presence of the following two points: (2)

  1. Dirt & Green deposits; clean with low pressure water and a soft brush or use Exterior Soap (consult Technical Data Sheet before use)
  2. Fading of colours: If necessary (concerning point b) apply a maintenance coat according to the instructions. The frequency of maintenance depends on the weather conditions, exposure, geographical situation, solar orientation, wood type (softwood vs hardwood) and colour. In normal weather conditions:
  • Vertical surfaces: every 3 years
  • Horizontal surfaces: up to 2 years
