The 2026 Rubio Monocoat Makers Build-off was a major highlight of WoodEX for Africa, held from 9–11 June at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The three-day competition brought together three talented South African makers — Brandon Scheepers of Made. Dot, Greg Stock of Stock Woodworks and Warren Turnbull of Hutch Custom — who were challenged to design, build and finish functional furniture pieces under intense time pressure and in front of a live trade audience. The competition showcased the skill, creativity, precision and problem-solving abilities required to produce high-quality furniture within a demanding deadline. Supported by leading industry sponsors, the makers worked with quality white oak, veneer, professional tools and woodworking equipment to bring their designs to life. Each completed piece was prepared with Rubio Monocoat RAW Wood Cleaner before being finished with Oil Plus 2C in Light Roast and Cortado, highlighting the natural beauty and character of the timber while providing durable protection. The build-off proved to be a constant crowd-puller throughout the exhibition, giving visitors an opportunity to watch the makers work, interact with them and experience the craftsmanship behind each piece. In the end, Brandon Scheepers claimed first place, followed by Greg Stock in second and Warren Turnbull in third.
