When Carel from Rubio first approached me last year to enter the build-off, I had a look at some of the pieces entered and I have to say – they were beautiful!!

I thought about some ideas during December 2025. Carel phoned me up: “Are you in or are you out??” I asked whether I could team up with a good friend of mine, Hannes Coetzee – who does all my CNC and laser work for my functional art business, as his shop is better equipped for carpentry than mine. Fortunately Carel agreed and off we went.
As space is a huge challenge in today’s day and age, I told Hannes that we should try and do a multifunctional, space saving piece that would look just as at home in a Fourways apartment as on a Campsbay patio.

We came up with a mobile kitchen island unit that would serve its purpose in more ways than one…

Sideboard, food prepping station, drinks/bar counter, breakfast nook, hobby/craft table, even a cool study/workspace!! Pretty much anything you can think of with all the bells and whistles regarding storage thrown in! All at the cost of only around two square meters I might add…

The structure consists of a combination of solid Oak and Oak veneered Birch plywood – to keep the weight down on the internal frame and drawers. Heavy duty castors for mobility and, needless to say, littered with Blum’s world class kitchen goodies.

And finally, we finished it with Rubio Monocoat’s Pre-Aging, colour “Authentic #5” and Oil Plus 2C – “Affogato” – new in their colour range. The exterior surfaces were also finished with the Sheen Plus, giving our rustic feel some much needed sheen.

I present to you: “The Heritage Hub”

About the maker

Francois Lensley & Hannes Coetzee

“My name is Francois Lensley. I’m an actor, director and functional artist. Although custom knives are one of my most popular items, I love creating with any medium… Have done some unique furniture pieces but this was an amazing challenge and teaming up Hannes Coetzee was a lot of fun. We both learned a lot and what a privilege to be part of this initiative.” – Francois Lensley

“I am a full-time programmer by day, sawdust generator and laser engraver by night. I spend my working hours debugging complex code, and my after-hours turning trees into furniture and vaporising custom designs with a fibre laser. I genuinely thrive on a tough challenge, which is probably why I enjoy woodworking so much – mostly because I still haven’t figured out how to Ctrl+Z a bad saw cut in real life. I love keeping my mind and hands constantly busy, bridging the gap between digital precision and old-school craftsmanship one project at a time.” – Hannes Coetzee
